In our previous blog post we previewed the imminent availability of the all-new Garrett Guide handheld security metal detector, from our store. This state-of-the-art metal detector wand is now available, along with a range of Garrett Guide Checkpoint Kits.

Garrett Guide - Key Features

The new Garrett Guide metal detector has evolved from the standard-setting Garrett Superscanner V model which has become the widely trusted handheld metal detector, used by police and security personnel, worldwide. This latest technology model builds on Garrett’s 40 year history of expertise to provide outstanding features that set a new, high standard for handheld security metal detectors.

Ergonomic Design

The new Garrett Guide weighs in at only half a kilogram and is perfectly balanced to enable prolonged use without causing strain to the operator. The handle features a specially designed dimpled rubber grip and the optional wrist strap ensures the device is never lost.

The rugged Garrett Guide construction meets rigorous U.S. military standards for drop tests, so this detector will easily withstand bumps and knocks without risk of damage. And its totally suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, in all weathers, with water resistance meeting IP 65 standards.

Powered by an internal, rechargeable lithium ion battery, the detector provides up to 125 hours of continuous operation from a fully charged battery. This removes the need to dispose of disposable batteries and minimises the frequency of recharging cycles.

Controls and indicators on the device are conveniently located for easy operation. LEDs on the base of the detector provide a valuable indication of the battery charge status and a red flashing LED, on the side of the unit, indicates when charging is in progress.

A thumb operated toggle switch and push button are used to select the required operating mode. The toggle switch enables the selection of either audio alert or vibration, when metal is detected. Vibration mode is particularly useful in noisy environments or situations where its important not to reveal metal detection to subjects being scanned.

A green LED indicates when the device is switched on and ready to use and a flashing LED indicates metal is detected.

This lightweight, ergonomic, ultra sensitive handheld security metal detector will be welcomed by those working in busy security screening environments where rapid throughput is required without risk of missing any prohibited metal items.

Enhanced Target Identification and Notch Discrimination

The new Garrett Guide security metal detector surpasses all currently available metal detecting wands with its features and incredible sensitivity.

Notch discrimination enables the detector to be configured to ignore certain ‘non threat’ metal signatures, based on their conductivity and size. This is achieved by dividing the detection spectrum into segments or ‘notches’ which can then be either accepted or rejected. A 5-segment bar-graph LED conductivity indicator shows the most-likely detected metal type, based on its conductivity.

This capability is particularly useful in situations where there is a high volume of foot traffic that needs to be security screened. Persistently detecting non-threat items, such as keys and coins, would obviously slow down screening. Notch discrimination allows these items to be ignored by the detector while still reliably detecting blades, metal vapes or other prohibited items.

Adjustable High Sensitivity

The Garrett Guide offers seven selectable sensitivity levels that can be configured for anything from general security screening to high-sensitivity clean-room level metal detection. The device sensitivity can be readily configured to filter out electromagnetic interference from power lines or other electronic devices, or to ignore nearby metal objects such as rebar or rubbish.

Multiple Operating Modes

The Garrett Guide offers a range of configurable operating modes that can be readily tailored to suit different screening requirements. These modes affect the manner in which alerts are presented, how the device copes with interference, how sensitive the detector is and how it behaves when metal is detected, or isn’t.

As noted, the Garrett Guide is simply activated using a single button with an additional button to change modes and a toggling rocker switch to select either audio or vibration alerts.

Its easy for the operator to select between audio mode or silent vibration mode, as required. Audio mode provides a clear, audible indication when metal is detected. Vibration mode is useful in certain environments where an audible alarm would not be appropriate. The detection of metal is also indicated by a red, flashing alert LED.

As noted, the device offers seven configurable sensitivity levels which determine how easily the device picks up metal items. Users have reported how the detector can detect a paper clip from a range of 5cm. For larger metallic items, such as knives, the detection range is much greater. If there is interference from background metal, such as rebar and building materials, then the sensitivity level might be reduced. But higher sensitivity settings enable the detection of very small metal items such as foil wraps or jewellery.

Another important mode control is the offset button. This can be used to reduce the impact of electromagnetic interference (EMI) from other handheld detectors or electrical sources. Pressing this button offsets the detection baseline, reducing sensitivity to avoid false positive alarms caused by interference. This is particularly useful in environments where multiple detectors are in use or spaces in which there is electrical equipment.

Who Needs the Garrett Guide?

The versatile Garrett Guide offers several modes and configurable settings that can be tailored to different screening environments. Although the detector is designed primarily for security screening this exceptional metal detector has found a significant audience in hobbyist markets like treasure and relic hunting, due to the metal detector`s sensitivity, precision and reliability.

The Garrett Guide can reliably detect all ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including stainless steel. It will detect weapons, mobile phones, vapes, foil wrapped drugs, jewellery and much more. These outstanding detection capabilities make this easy-to-use detector highly suitable for all security applications.

In some circumstances there is the additional challenge of randomly selecting people or bags for screening. In order to totally remove the potential for bias and accusations of prejudice we recommend the use of Random Search Selectors. These simple devices alleviate operators by automatically making genuinely random selections.

Airports and Transportation Hubs

Security screening at airports and transport hubs plays a vital role in ensuring potentially dangerous items aren’t taken onboard aircraft, ships, coaches and buses. Busy security personnel need to quickly and reliably scan huge numbers of travellers to ensure prohibited items are not being carried.

Schools, Colleges, Exam Centres

Many schools and colleges now use random security screening procedures to make certain students are not bringing prohibited items, such as vapes or mobile phones, onto school premises. Sadly, there is also the need to make certain knives and other weapons are not being concealed. Reliable, fast scanning with a super-sensitive security metal detector makes the screening process as unintrusive as possible.

Prisons and Correctional Facilities

Everybody entering a prison or correctional facility, including staff, inmates and visitors, is subject to security screening for concealed contraband. And prison officers routinely need to quickly but effectively inspect and check prison cells. A reliable handheld metal detecting wand makes this process quick, easy and effective.

Courts and High Security Government Buildings

People entering courtrooms routinely need to be security screened to make certain weapons are not being carried. And high security government establishments need to maintain extremely high security standards to ensure the safety and security of personnel and visiting dignitaries.

Entertainment Venues and Events

Night clubs and concert venues need to reliably but quickly security check queues of attendees to make certain they are not carrying prohibited items such as weapons or drugs. Similarly, events such as festivals and outdoor concerts, need to make certain nobody is carrying knives or other prohibited items.

Museums, Galleries and Places of Worship

Museums, galleries and many other premises, need to protect what are often highly valuable artifacts as well as the many people who attend these locations. The safety of gatherings is enhanced by reliable security screening of attendees to make certain nobody is carrying prohibited items.

Warehouses, Retail Centres, Shops and Commercial Premises

Security screening at warehouses, retail centres and commercial premises is often primarily focused on loss prevention. Employees and staff might be subjected to random security screening to reduce pilfering. Also, contractors and visitors coming onto the premises may need to be security checked.

Utility Sites and Industrial Premises

Industrial premises, construction sites and utility sites sometimes suffer from tool theft that can be very impactful. Security screening personnel using a reliable handheld metal detecting scanner acts as a powerful anti-theft deterrent.

Political Rallies, Protests and Special Events

Political rallies, conferences, protests and special events all need high levels of security to prevent undesirable items, such as weapons and explosives, from being carried. Security personnel at these locations and events need a reliable way to scan people with minimal physical contact, which is exactly what the Garrett Guide security metal detector provides.

Hospitals and Psychiatric Facilities

Hospitals, health centres and psychiatric facilities all need robust security to prevent unwanted items from being brought in. Security screening in emergency, heightened threat scenarios is particularly important. Garrett Guide metal detectors help ensure these establishments remain safe and secure.
