Classification of containers for cargo transportation

To transport cargo by container oversea, you will need a container ship and a container.

Types of containers differ in purpose, volume, configuration and capacity. In fact, this is temporary reliable storage for the cargo transported by the company, equipped with ventilation, a cooling system, and a locking device.

The volume of the container, its shape and additional functions depend on the cargo that is planned to be transported.

International container classification

The standardization of reusable containers used for transportation by different modes of transport was made back in the seventies of the last century. The first to come to this practice were the military, who conducted long-term campaigns in different countries. And then the experience was adopted by carriers who appreciated the ability to quickly move containers of standard sizes. Especially in the case of moving cargo by water, rail or air, without unloading the contents each time when changing transport.

The following containers are used in the world for cargo transportation:

DC - is a standardized box designed for dry cargo, it is also called a dry cargo box. Available in two versions to accommodate 20 or 40 feet of goods.

HC - features higher walls (one foot) and increased capacity.

PW -  is an extended version (2500 mm) that can accommodate two standard Euro pallets (pallets).

OT - features a removable canvas cover that allows vertical loading.

HT - features a hinged metal lid, suitable for vertical loading.

UT - is the general name for containers with a removable or hinged lid, intended for vertical loading.

FR - the most open platform (with sidewalls), is effectively used for transportation, fast loading/unloading of oversized heavy loads using the equipment.

SN - a specialized version, the main purpose of which is the transportation of live goods (livestock, fish, poultry).

TC - is a sealed reinforced tank for flammable or  hazardous liquids, solids or liquefied gas.

RE - is a thermally insulated refrigerator connected to a power source.

When choosing a suitable option, you need to take into account that even international standardization allows for slight discrepancies in dimensions. They vary by manufacturer. The exact parameters must be clarified with the representative of the company carrying out the cargo transportation.

Pros and cons of container shipping

Over the decades of use, container transportation has proven its effectiveness; Its standardization, the use of equipment and cranes has greatly simplified the procedure for loading, unloading and changing the type of transport. Now the goods reach their destination faster, the cost of delivery is reduced.

Metal walls protect against damage, and reliable constipation and the absence of direct contact with a person-prevent theft. It is convenient to reload a large box from one vehicle to another without transferring goods.

The only negative point to it is the use of large or even huge containers for shipping, which is not cost-effective if you need to move a small amount of goods. In this case, it is better to use road or air transportation or share the container, where your cargo is stored, with someone else - LCL (Less than Container Load)

The variety of options allows you to choose the best option for the reliable transportation of cargo. Animals will be transported in the most secure platform, liquid and dangerous goods are transported in reliable tank tanks, perishable goods will be transported in a refrigerator or in a container equipped with forced ventilation that does not allow condensation to form.
