Heavy Duty Castors – 5 Useful Qualities
26-05-2017
Larger Load Capacity
Our heavy duty castors have load capacities from 800kg (0.8 tonnes) to a substantially heavier 10,000kg (10 tonnes), making them versatile for carrying heavy and extremely bulky loads by road or by sea.
As loads of this size are likely industrial in nature, castors of this type are built with a very sturdy design in order to enable them to tolerate the load. They are also occasionally made suitable for travelling at faster speeds.
Larger Wheels
A castor is of no use to anyone if someone isn’t able to use it to push or to pull their load safely. That is why it is so important that castors roll as easily as possible for ease of use and to prevent unnecessary injury.
For this reason, our heavy duty castors often have wheel diameters of up to 400mm, larger than that found on lighter weight castors. Because their larger wheels distribute weight more evenly, they are easier to roll. This is a key advantage in using heavy duty castors over smaller variants, particularly when handling a tricky load.
Specialised Tyres and Centres
It is possible to fit heavy duty castors with different types of tyres and centres that enable them to function in harsh environments and ensure maximum stability. On a standard concrete floor, any type of wheel material like nylon would work fine. However, if a floor is tiled, rough or uneven, greater floor protection is required.
Our heavy duty castors are often fitted with polyurethane or heavy duty rubber tyres to handle this type of problem, or are available with welted steel or cast iron centres to enable them to cope with very heavy loads.
Swivel and Wheel Modifications
It’s important to be able to rotate a castor for it to have sufficient manoeuvrability and stability. It is for this reason that our heavy duty castors come in several swivel and wheel variants such as swivel castors, fixed castors or swivel with wheel brakes.
In addition to single wheel castors, our heavy duty castors are also available with a twin wheel option to enable them to carry extremely heavy loads. Other heavy duty castors are spring-loaded, which enables vibration-free travel. This modification helps prevent damage to particularly fragile loads, especially when travelling over rougher environments.
Designed for Faster Travelling Speed
Compared to lighter weight castors, the industrial nature and heavier load of heavy duty castors means that their ability to move at speed is essential. Our heavy duty castors are designed for travelling speeds of up to 4km/h.
As you can see, heavy duty castors are useful for a myriad of reasons. If you have any queries about the best-suited castor for you or have a specific type of castor in mind, please don’t hesitate to contact us here at 360 Castors and Wheels.
