END OF YEAR WORKS DAY OUT
20-02-2015
On November the 16th last year, The Directors and Staff enjoyed a days racing @ Uttoxeter Race Course. As we had not been able to organize any works days out for over a year we decided to “Splash Out” and
do something really special for us all to enjoy; especially as we had, yet another tough but rewarding financial year, with signs so far this year, indicating that 2013/2014 could be even better than last year!
We kicked our day out off by meeting at Ashby’s latest and recently opened Wetherspoons Pub, The Shoulder of Mutton.
Everyone arriving suitably dressed in race day conforming attire, in fact we looked a most smart and impressive group of stalwart race goers, particularly young Anthony who arrived wearing a most appropriate Flat Cap! which truly set off and complimented his outfit.
Despite the early hour of 9am! some of the more hardy constitutions within our rank started the day as they ended it with a pint or two! The less adventurous playing safe with tea, coffee and soft drinks.
As arranged, our friendly local cab company A1 Taxi’s collected the majority of our crew.
Doug and Richard for various reasons choosing to drive themselves over.
Eventually we all arrived at the most impressive main Grandstand, where we took the lift to the top of the Grandstand to where our private box was situated.
Our private corporate entertainment box did not disappoint, allowing us magnificent views that looked out on to all areas of the race track.
The box itself offered a generous reception area with dining room complete with flat screen televisions, large dining table big enough to accommodate us all easily, a central bar area that was hosted by the lovely Kristina of Kiev; a cozy lounge with sofas, that led forwards, through patio doors out on to the outside balcony area, that overlooked the paddock, lower grandstand standing area and further outward to where all the action of the coming day was to unfold out on the race track.
As the beer, wine, flowed and various combinations of brandies and whisky followed; one of our number whom shall remain nameless?........ but was sporting a rather fetching brown flat cap, felt that he could access the balcony area without first opening the large double glazed patio doors!
His poor little face was a picture as the realization of what he had just done occurred to him as he sat on the floor rubbing his head and face, after bouncing off the glass doors and rebounding a full metre back into whence he had just come from. The sudden jolt appearing to quickly sober him up.
Months later the poor boy is still receiving consistent barracking and ribbing from his work colleagues.
Placing bets was easy, as the Tote was just a short walk down the corridor from our box. A little later we all wished that they had made it far more difficult!........
It was decided that we would run a small kitty placing a pound each per race; sadly we could not manage any winners, and just about scraped together enough money to give a tip to our host Kristina, who was delighted and most grateful for our kind gesture.
As the day wore on it became increasingly clear that none of our party were to leave the racecourse richer than when they arrived, but despite not winning riches beyond our wildest dreams!, the day turned out a complete success with many of us, slightly worse for ware, after a days drinking and fine dining, the food was excellent and plentiful and thoroughly enjoyed by us all.
The ride home was uneventful, as our driver had been gently warned about of his erratic driving during our outbound trip that caused us some distress, apparently he drove most careful and considerately on the return journey back to Ashby, where a small group of hardened drinkers continued partying for a few more hours, at various venues in Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
All in all a top perfect day out for all the Staff of Abbey Extrusions, which no doubt we will do again at some point soon
