Should children be taught CPR in Schools?
11-09-2023
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a skill for life. Educating and empowering young people to help in an emergency is an important achievement. CPA can be used in many different emergencies; such as cardiac arrest, heart attacks, suffocation, and many more.
CPR is a combination of techniques, including chest compressions, designed to pump the heart to get blood circulating and deliver oxygen to the brain until reliable treatment can stimulate the heart to start working again.
The basic steps for performing CPR can be used for adults, children and infants. They are based on guidelines that are easy to follow and remember.
The basic steps are:
D ? Dangers?
R ? Response?
S ? Send for help
A ? Open airway
B ? Normal breathing
C ? Start CPR
D ? Attach defibrillator (AED)
In the UK, every year, more than 30,000 cardiac arrests happen out of the hospital, and fewer than one in 10 people survive. Evidence shows that survival rates from cardiac arrest are up to three times higher in countries that teach CPR in schools.
The idea of teaching school children CPR and basic first aid skills in school is not a new concept. Evidence shows that survival rates from cardiac arrest are up to three times higher in countries that teach CPR in schools. For example, we could match the survival rates of Norway where CPR is taught in secondary schools, then it would be possible to save around 5,000 lives per year in the UK.
Can teachers teach CPR and First Aid?
Teachers who have completed CPR training themselves can teach pupils. However, a study carried out showed that one of the main drawbacks to implementing CPR training in secondary schools is that teachers didn?t feel confident enough in their CPR skills to teach this subject to their pupils.
