Summer means BBQs, festivals and beer! Whilst everyone appreciates a beer that tastes good, people usually don’t want to spend an arm and leg on buying it. Nothing beats sitting in the garden on a warm summer evening and drinking a cold beer that hasn’t harmed your wallet (or purse).
With an abundance of events taking place during the summer months and lots of beer being passed around, it got us thinking about the beers that do cost an unbelievable amount. These are not the kind of beers that you would expect to find in your local corner shop!
We have put together a guide to some of these costly beers.
Schorschbock 57
Schorschbock 57 is considered as being one of the world’s strongest beers. With an ABV of 57.5%, it’s not surprising that a beer with a higher volume would be violating the beer purity laws in Germany. Only 36 bottles were made by Schorschbrau, and those who did try it had mixed opinions. Some claimed that it was too smoky and nutty, and that they could taste raisins.
Cost: Each of the 36 bottles that were released was given a price tag of $200 each. So in this country, you would be spending around £128.
Space Barley
Back in 2006, a bunch of Japanese and Russian scientists decided to join forces to find out how well barley could grow all the way in space. Barley seeds were sent to the International Space Station, and were then planted aboard Zvezda Service Module. The fourth generation of barley was eventually brought back to earth after 5 months in orbit.
Japanese brewer Sapporo was then tasked with fermenting it so that they had the very first space beer.
Cost: A six pack of this beer will set you back around $110, which is around £70. Ouch
Utopias
Samuel Adams’ Utopias is considered as being one of the most expensive beers in the whole of the USA. Released in 2002 as a limited edition beer, it was immediately banned in 13 states due to its alcohol volume – 27%.
It’s made with caramel, Vienna, Moravian and Bavarian smoked malts, and then matured in scotch, port and cognac barrels. Only 9000 bottles were released, and we think that a lot of people probably didn’t want to shell out lots of money for it.
Cost:A 700ml bottle would cost you $150, so around £96 – yikes!
Antarctic Nail Ale
This ale was brewed using water that had been melted from an Antarctic iceberg dug by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. All profits that were made after this limited edition beer was released were given directly to the welfare organisation.
There was a very small amount of them made – only 30! With this in mind, the prices of these beer skyrocketed.
Cost: Some went for as much as $1,815 when there were only a few left. This meant people were spending over a grand on one bottle of beer.
We hope that this post hasn’t made you too thirsty, or doesn’t empty your wallet too much! We recommend sticking to those that are reasonably priced.
