As much as we don’t want to drop this bombshell on you... it is fast approaching winter! The clocks have gone back, the days are getting shorter, essentially we’re just awaiting Santa to rear his bearded head and then we can start looking forward to warmer climates again. However, the while the weather continues to get worse there’s always demand for our MIG welding gas, which means the work doesn’t stop. So, is there anything different about the way welding is conducted in winter?
Well, in short yes... To guarantee whether your welder is able to cope with the cooler wintery conditions, consult your operating manual. Here you will find temperature specifications and the degree to which these will limit your welding machine.
Does Cold Effect Weld Strength?
Absolutely. With the weather being significantly cooler (and cooling!), the welds will naturally cool faster. As such, this can lead to an increased likelihood that these welds will crack during and after welding. One way to tackle this issue is through preheating around the area you are to weld to a temperature of at least 50°F; this warms up the material and means it isn’t as much of a ‘shock’ when the welding begins and ends.
Select Appropriate Clothing
Rushing the job is never a good idea when it comes to welding, so give yourself the optimum chance of your body fighting the chill to make sure that you have the capabilities to withstand the cold. Opt for suitable winter clothing so that you don’t freeze, yet also make sure that the outerwear of your clothing is fire retardant. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean your clothing can’t catch fire! When opting for steel toed boots, make sure that they are specifically made for winter, because you’ll soon find out if they aren’t. Also, and we’re going to sound like your mother, but don’t forget your gloves, headgear and something to keep your ears and head warm!
Welding jobs don’t stop just because the chillier climates are setting in, so make sure you’re prepared for when the truly wintery weather hits! This includes making sure that you have enough gas to conduct your job, of course. So, if you would like to speak to one of our friendly team about our services, then don’t hesitate to get in touch.
