GOING THE EXTRA MILE: JOHN O’GROATS
As part of our “going the extra mile” video which we’re launching in summer 22, our plan (albeit an ambitious one), was to take our range of filling, capping and labelling machines around the British Isles and film them fully operational in obscure locations.
The first destinations that sprang to mind were the most northerly and southerly parts of our island, with John O’Groats being our chosen location for the northern tip, and Land’s End selected for the Southern destination. This saw us commit to embark on a trip with a PL-501 fully automatic labeller, the machine chosen for filming at the John O’Groats location, to John O’Groats in Feb 22.
Coincidently, during January 22 an enquiry came through the website from a small Scottish microbrewery looking for a wraparound labeller for their glass bottles – this company was called John O’Groats Brewery.
Over 3 days we travelled more than 1,100 miles through rain, sleet, and snow with our PL-501 along with our compact ELF-50 desktop labelling machine with TIJ batch coder that had been pre-specified through conversations with the brewery before departure.
Arriving late in the evening on the first day, the owners kindly offered the hospitality of the Seaview Hotel, which is owned by one of the cofounders of the brewery. We happily partook in sampling the large array of gins and whiskeys (…it would have been rude not to), ate, and headed upstairs ready for an early rise the following morning.
After a hearty breakfast we ventured out to clear blue sky’s – and a strong headwind – made our way to the celebrated signpost and filmed the PL-501 machine in action.
Following a successful morning, we went to visit the brewery and met with the owners who gave us a tour of the newly refurbished “last house”, and informed that after welcoming over 250k visitors to John O’Groats in 2021, their plans are now to create a tourist hotspot over the coming years offering a range of locally brewed ales and stouts. Take a look around in the video
We installed the ELF-50 which the guys at the brewery were over the moon with before beginning the long journey home, with a slight detour through the highlands to visit Fort William and take in the natural wildlife – overall, a very successful trip!
