AdBlue is widely used throughout the On-Road, NRMM and stationary engine markets as a means of converting Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) into Nitrogen and water vapour with the aid of a catalyst. NOx can cause irreversible damage to lung tissue and as such, it is now a primary target of pollutant to reduce in our atmosphere to improve air quality. AdBlue or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a solution made up of 32.5% Urea and 67.5% deionised water. It is a non-hazardous clear solution which is used for the purpose, as mentioned above, of reducing NOx emissions from exhaust gas by means of SCR - Selective Catalytic Reduction. During the SCR process the Urea solution is injected into the exhaust stream before a vanadium coated catalyst which is where the reduction takes place. SCR Systems are sensitive to the quality of urea solution that passes through them. The recommended standard is ISO 22241-1 which specifies the quality characteristics of the NOx reducing solution. It is important to purchase the correct standard of urea or you may damage the catalyst. It is likewise vitally important to store AdBlue correctly to ensure that no impurities can gain access to storage tanks and then cross contaminate the tanks feeding the dosing systems. It should be noted that although the 32.5% Urea solution is not classed as hazardous, it does pose a threat to the aquatic environment and should be stored and disposed of properly. AdBlue spill kits are readily available and should be stored near your AdBlue dispensing equipment.
