The major cause of turbo-charger trouble is lack of lubrication. This oil lag can result in bearing damage, wheel rub or seal damage.
After you shut down your hot engine the oil pressure drops to zero PSI. As the turbine’s wheel winds down to stop its heat is conducted
to the bearings and seals. The little oil that is left often breaks down – leaving varnish and carbon deposits. Thus the lack of lubrication
damages bearings and can result in a major breakdown.
At cold engine start the main oil feed line to the turbo is empty, so your turbine rotates on dry bearings until oil is pumped into the turbocharger, naturally this causes excessive wear.
