As we welcome the summer season, it's essential to offer guidance to those working outdoors. Whether you're in hospitality, leisure, the public sector, or any other profession requiring outdoor exposure, such as construction, it’s vital to ensure your employees are protected from the harmful effects of the sun, both in the short and long term.
Today, we have more knowledge than ever about the dangers posed by the sun’s rays, making it even more important to take protective measures. Cancer Research UK, alongside the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), is leading efforts to raise awareness about the impact of the sun on our skin. Their research suggests that adopting sun safety strategies could prevent up to 9 out of 10 cases of melanoma skin cancer. The connection between sun exposure and skin cancer, including both melanoma and non-melanoma types, is well-documented. The NHS warns that individuals with sun-damaged skin are at a slightly higher risk of developing skin cancer.
Who is Most at Risk?
It’s a common misconception that only those with naturally lighter skin are at risk of developing skin cancer. However, individuals with lighter skin may be more vulnerable. Prolonged exposure to UV rays increases the risk for everyone, regardless of skin tone. Outdoor workers, in particular, should regularly check their skin for unusual moles or spots. If you notice any new moles or spots, or if existing ones change in colour, size, or become itchy or bleed, it’s crucial to consult a doctor promptly. To ensure safety, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises those working in prolonged sunlight to always apply protection, especially if they:
- Have fair or freckled skin that doesn’t tan, or burns before tanning
- Have red or fair hair and light-coloured eyes
- Have a large number of moles
How Can We Protect Ourselves from the Sun?
Sunlight can be harmful to your skin, and a tan is a clear sign that your skin has been damaged. This damage is caused by the ultraviolet (UV) rays found in sunlight. Before choosing a sunscreen, consider how much time you spend in the sun and when you are exposed to it. For employees who work outdoors, it’s advisable to provide SPF50 sunscreen to protect them from the harmful effects of sun exposure. Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial, and that’s why we highly recommend using sun protection like sunscreen. At Alliance Online, we offer factor 50 sun protection, along with a convenient skin protection board that features a lockable dispenser for sunscreen. This board is particularly useful in outdoor work environments, as it not only offers sun protection but also serves as an excellent tool for communicating important signs to watch for and UV levels.
Why Are We Telling You This?
We’ve written this article because we believe that the risks associated with outdoor work are often overlooked. Unprotected exposure to UV rays can be harmful and have long-term consequences. Surprisingly, a survey conducted by SC Johnson Professional in 2020 revealed that 76% of UK health and safety professionals were unaware of this danger.
At Alliance Online, we prioritise worker safety and are committed to educating our customers about products that enhance the safety of both staff and customers.
