2020 Britain in Bloom competition cancelled
03-04-2020
At Amberol we shared the sadness that no doubt many of you felt when the RHS announced that, in light of the national health emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s Britain in Bloom competition is cancelled.
The decision was taken in March by the RHS to call off the national event to ensure compliance with government instructions on social distancing, travel restrictions and self-isolation.
Taking steps to protect ourselves and each other
Despite the inevitable disappointment that this will cause for In Bloom groups and especially finalists, our MD Patience Atkinson-Gregory is in full support of the decision.
“Of course, it’s very sad that the RHS has had to take this step, but it’s also very much the right one in the circumstances,” she commented. “It goes against government advice and legislation for groups to be out and about planting and maintaining displays, even outside. Fortunately, many areas have already planted out some beautiful spring displays which are blooming thanks to the mild spring weather that some of the UK has recently experienced.”
However, Patience feels that all that hard work hasn’t been wasted and that the displays planted by In Bloomers are now even more important than ever. “In these difficult times I think we all need something to cheer us up and to lift our spirits so the hard work that councils and Britain in Bloom groups have already put in to create beautiful floral displays will be much appreciated I’m sure.”
The RHS thanks the In Bloom community
This year’s national competition had 70 finalists, including many Amberol customers. A statement made by the RHS explained that the decision to cancel Britain in Bloom had been taken to ensure the health and safety of communities, volunteers and judges.
The RHS also spelt out their appreciation for the work of In Bloom groups up and down the country saying: ‘We thank communities for all the hard work they’ve put in so far – their work helps to make the UK cleaner and greener, supports British wildlife and brings people of all ages together.’
