Take a stand against littering with the Great British Spring Clean

On the weekend of the 3rd to 5th March, over 1,000 litter picks will take place across the UK as part of the Great British Spring Clean. The Great British Spring Clean is a campaign that aims to bring the public together to clear up the litter that tarnishes towns, villages, countryside and coastline. The annual event began in 2015 and since then has gained support from the public and businesses, attracting sponsors such as Costa, Lidl and RSPCA. The Spring Clean event brings together people who are concerned about levels of litter and who are willing to put their own time and effort into clearing up the country. It’s also about sending a message to those who drop the litter that there is growing movement of people who find littering unacceptable. With 500,000 people expected to take a stand and help pick litter, the event shows just how many people are in favour of finding a solution to the problem. More information can be found here. Finding a solution for littering The event is a step in the direction and shows a nationwide desire to pull together to tackle a problem. However, the best solution is to tackle littering at source. Money has been spent on advertising campaigns and promotions to prompt correct disposal of waste, but there is always room for improvement. A positive litter strategy from councils should encourage residents to take responsibility for disposing of their waste properly and to take pride in their surroundings. Success can save councils money, improve the appearance of the town, village or city and increase funding in other areas.
