What is SMIDS?
SMIDS stands for Ships Movement Information Display System. AMI Marine launched the SMIDS Legacy system (SYS-0053) back in the early 1990’s. It quickly became a best-seller, with Saudi Aramco being our first customer, after they decommissioned their Doppler Docking Systems and fitted the SMIDS systems.
This SDME system has supported masters and pilots navigating and manoeuvring offshore and in ports whether in strong winds or varied sea states. The reliable and accurate ships movement data became a key feature, propelling SMIDS into a trusted ‘must-have’ for large bulk cargo carriers along with the dredging industry.
In 2025, the SMIDS Pro replaces our Legacy system with an in-house developed software suite, allowing for intuitive and user friendly operation on the bridge. It takes the classic GNSS positioning function, sharpens it up, and combines all features into one system, rather than needing numerous related equipment. Therefore, SMIDS Pro provides flexibility to vessel owners, affording them the opportunity to create a unique version of SMIDS Pro to meet individual vessel requirements.
You can add the following features to the SMIDS Pro
1. SYS-0093 SMIDS Pro Docking System – (Available Now)
2. SYS-0094 SMIDS Pro Docking System with Pilot (Currently in the final stages of development)
3. SYS-0095 SMIDS Pro Satellite Speed Log System – (Available Now)
4. SYS-0096 SMIDS Pro Panama Pilot System (Currently in the final stages of development)
What does the SMIDS Pro do?
- Uses high accuracy, multi-constellation GNSS Positioning.
- An approved Transmitting Heading Device (THD) with an integral GNSS heading sensor.
- Recalls previously visited berth locations.
- Can be used as a Primary or Secondary Heading Device.
- Predictive Berthing Assistance function.
Why should you install the new SMIDS Pro?
- Reduce docking and departure operation times whilst reducing carbon emissions.
- Enhances vessel safety by minimising the risk of damage to the ship, berth, and promoting crew safety.
- Easy retrofit installation, whether in dry dock or under way in certain operating conditions.
- The system is globally reliable, accurate, and unaffected by silt in coastal rivers (estuaries) or cavitation.
- Stern, Bow and Midships distance to berth information to assist with berthing in previously visited port or offshore locations.
The only maritime Satellite Speed Log approved for;
- IEC 61023:2007 – Marine Speed and Distance Measuring Equipment
- ISO 22090-3:2014 – Transmitting Heading Device
- IEC 61108-1 – GPS/GNSS Receiver Equipment
SYS-0093 System: SMIDS Pro Docking System
SYS-0093 is a Type-Approved Speed Log Docking System ideally suited to large vessels. It provides complete docking information for simple navigation, giving pilots accurate distance to berth and course indications for the vessel’s movements, including Stern, Bow, and Midships, with a worldwide accuracy of ±0.01kn/0.3m.
Benefits
- Accuracy of ±0.01 kn / 0.3m (30cm)
- Logs journey time and total distance travelled.
- Predictive Ships Movement and Distance to Berth.
- Data Replay software is embedded within each system sold and includes complimentary lifetime software updates.
SYS-0095 System: SMIDS Pro Satellite Speed Log System
The SYS-0095 configuration offers the most accurate Type Approved satellite speed log system for large commercial vessels. It is a modular 2-axis system for Speed Over Ground for all vessels constructed after 1st July, 2014.
Benefits
- Accuracy of ±0.01 kn / 0.3m.
- Logs journey time and total distance travelled.
- Complementary data Replay software for system and vessel performance review.
Popular Partner Brands of AMI Marine include Ben Marine products: and we have seen high interest in the Blind Anthea Speed Log, the 48mm Sensor and Hull Fitting, in various specifications, with and without valve fittings.
The Blind Anthea is an electromagnetic speed log designed to meet all ships’ needs. The cabinet and its peripherals are not limited in distance, which makes installations easier and is highly compatible with SMIDS Pro. It is also highly adaptable and can work with other Ben Marine sensors with the same electrical characteristics.
