LSE Interfaith Chapel
30-05-2014
This fantastic window was installed this week into the InterFaith Chapel in the newly opened LSE Student Centre. The window, designed by the artist Christopher Le Brun, is based around the theme of The Sacred Desert. It is made in three large panels of glass which have been hand painted with these rich powerful enamel colours that have been fired into the glass. It is Le Brun’s first venture into this medium and I very much hope not his last. The colours are extraordinarily saturated. The deep brilliant red shifts slowly across the window ending up as a rich powerful blue. It is a unique experience.
The room itself is quite small. The window encloses the space, turning it into a contained, private space. It is in the very nature of glass artworks that the experience shifts depending upon changes in the interior lighting and changes to the exterior lighting. This window is now different. With dim lighting in the interior the colours seem to become even more intense, as shown in the photograph above. In the near future exterior artificial lighting will be installed, adding another dimension to this unique experience.
