Midfield Concourse, Hong Kong Airport
We are working on a pair of back-lit glass features for a new Terminal at Hong Kong Airport. This is due to open in October this year. All the glass has be installed by July. These images give a sense of what it might look like in the flesh and some idea of what is involved in planning, designing and building a project of this scale. The glass panels are made with a mixture of airbrushed enamels on slumped glass laminated to a second layer of finely detailed digital ceramic printed glass These two enormous paintings in glass are being fabricated by The Peters Studio of Paderbonr in Germany. They are being made tothe very detailed designs of the UK artist Graham Jones. The Departures work is based on the idea of flight and air. The Arrivals painting is an image of the dynamism and energy of Hong Kong. The project is embracing such a wide range of techniques – with slumped glass creating a dynamic texture across the face of the glass, and the airbrushed enamels interpreting the very painterly brushstrokes so typical of the work of Jones. Behind this is another layer created by digital printing on glass, adding additional texture, detail and depth to the colours. Arup were commissioned to design the lighting system. They have created the perfect system that provides an even illumination, but yet one that is still dynamic. It does not flatten the glass but actually brings out the texture and the richness of the glass.
