While we don’t get enquiries to work on luxury sea vessels very often we jump at the opportunity when we do.
They give us different challenges than the large commercial vessels and manufacturing equipment than we usually work with and help keep our problem solving skills sharp.
Our latest project saw us working on providing a luxury yacht door seal for a leisure ship.
Enquiry
The initial enquiry was: “Can you help us?” And we are happy to say that the answer was yes! They needed to replace a leaking door seal to make the yacht safe again for sea travelling. A leaking door seal is never good as it compromises safety and loses revenue as the vessel is out of commission, so we set to work to minimise the amount of time the vessel was unusable.
We knew the door seal needed to be soft due to the door structure being made from fiberglass so we set on our task sourcing materials that would be suitable.
Delivery
After talking to the engineering department, we found out the type of vessel and what the door was made from as well as the sizes. We were advised that the yacht door seal was an unusual size would also need to be in a single length, adding to the complexity of the project.
The main challenge was the sizes of the seal and making it in one piece. The door seal was 60mm x 50mm x 14m long and also needed to be white as well as compressible without staying compressed.
In the end we decided that expanded silicone was the best option for the seal. It’s a weather resistant material and was available in required colour. As the yacht was white, the seal also needed to be white so that it blended into the ship’s colours.
Results
We sent a sample of a similar seal to the captain and the engineer so they could see what it would look like and how it would behave. This then lead to the order being placed for one door and then two months later, another order for a second door seal.
The chief engineer of the yacht company had this to say, “After I joined the company I discovered the seal for the stern door and the side tender door was leaking badly. After shopping around I came across Aquaseal Rubber and requested a quote. The quote was returned quickly and we soon had the seal dispatched to us in Malta.
The material is easy to work with so we were able to fit the seal in one piece rather than in several pieces that the heavier materials tend to need.
The real test was on the side door, which we launch our tender through. This door sees the hardest of conditions being located above the main engine exhausts and receives the full power of the oncoming sea against it in all directions. This seal has withstood the test and we are totally satisfied with the product.
As a chief engineer in the super yacht business I have seen many failed sealing arrangements on shell doors, but I would highly recommend this company if your considering replacing your failing shell door seal.”
We are proud to deliver another quality project for a satisfied customer. If you have a project that we would help you with, get in touch!
