Cladding a Steel Building
25-11-2019
Atlantic Steel Buildings have vast experience of designing and installing steel buildings for clients across the UK, we are experts in understanding what is important to the overall functionality and longevity of the building. One important element to consider in a building’ s construction is cladding.
What is Cladding and why is it used for steel constructions?
Cladding is extra layers that are placed outside of a building for a range of purposes including providing insulation for occupants within the building as well as serving as an aesthetic presence to make the outside appearance of a building more attractive. With working temperatures within offices in the UK being required to remain at a government standard of 16℃ insulated cladding can be vital in meeting regulations.
Cladding is also vital to the mechanical fortitude of a building providing additional protection against external temperature changes, strong winds, and humidity that can cause damage to the building.
Insulated cladding is also necessary when a building needs a firewall to comply with boundary fire or fire wall requirements. Kingspan insulated cladding provides the required fire resistance to meet the Building Regulations in these areas.
Types of Cladding:
When erecting a steel building, metal cladding is generally a preferred option and provides the most benefits in terms of protection and insulation, however, it is not the only form of cladding a building can have. The main types of cladding include:
Steel – Steel cladding is one of the easiest materials that can be used for construction, due to the ease with which constructors can work with it, this results in it being installed faster than other options. In addition to this and the aesthetic nature of steel cladding, it is highly durable and will maintain the same appearance as the day of installation for many decades after, unlike other alternatives.
Wood – This provides a very pleasant design aesthetic when installed however it needs to be constantly maintained to ensure protection against bugs and termites. Timber can also be clad onto the outside of our insulated panels; thus providing an upmarket look to a building combined with superior weather-proofing and insulation.
Bricks and Mortar – Made from natural materials (clay soil) and can provide great thermal insulation to those within the building. The carbon footprint associated with mass-producing is an issue for certain constructors.
Vinyl (PVC) – A long-lasting form of cladding and is one of the most inexpensive options you can choose from. However, in the event of fire can be a highly dangerous material due to the fumes associated with the combustion of PVC.
All in all, insulated cladding helps buildings during the summer protect occupants from high levels of sunlight and gives increased thermal insulation during the winter months. This can help commercial buildings stay within the legal government-regulated temperature and assists in reducing the need for temperature altering devices that can impact on energy outlays.
