Hot Rolled Steel Building Kits

As one of the UK’s most respected steel building suppliers, we know what we’re talking about when it comes to the various properties of steel. A versatile material in its own right, it can be manufactured in a number of different ways, each of which imparts different characteristics to the finished product.
Two common varieties in the steel building industry are hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel. You might have seen the construction materials of a given building labelled as such. What are these processes, and what do they mean for your steel frame buildings?
Hot-rolled steel
Hot-rolled steel is manufactured at a temperature of 1000°C, utilising a special process to prevent it from hardening as it is worked into shape. As the steel cools to room temperature, its overall tolerance will alter in the process. Generally more robust and thicker than its cold-rolled counterparts, hot-rolled steel is used where strength and durability are the most important considerations. Therefore, it is useful in the construction of larger steel frame buildings that are required to support greater weight across a wider area. Hot-rolled steel can either be primed or galvanized to suit your desired use and/or your pocket.
Cold-rolled steel
Cold-rolled steel is manufactured at room temperature, as a result of which the finished product does not need to be cooled. This means that the steel’s tolerance is not affected by the sudden change in temperature making it less susceptible to sudden breaks. Developed during World War I as a less fuel-intensive method of steel production, it has only really come into its own in the last 15 years. The resulting steel is extremely lightweight, whilst maintaining significant strength, making it ideal for smaller steel-framed buildings. Its lightness also means that foundations need not be dug as deep to support the finished building. Cold-rolled steel is also pre-galvanized, giving your steel frame protection against the elements.
Here at Atlantic Steel Buildings we can incorporate either hot- or cold-rolled steel elements into your steel frame building. It all depends on your specific requirements, as we will always recommend the appropriate material that will result in the best quality, most economical and longest-lasting build.
