The Bank Job

Friday, March 12, 1976 The next time Brian Sayers tries drilling his way through a bank wall he will be more careful. This week police thought they had caught the worst bank robber in the world. For Brian, of Amidas Gardens, Dagenham, got the drill all wrong on his latest bank job. There he was last Sunday morning, standing on the corner of a main street boring his way into a branch of Barclay's Bank. The 28-year-old father of two was just about to set to work with oxy-acetylene equipment when he noticed he'd been surrounded by a bunch of boys in blue. Without knowing it he had drilled through one of the bank's alarm systems and triggered off a warning in the local police station. Brian, a welder and fitter, had been contracted to fit parking posts for the bank in Hoe Street, Walthamstow. But the police were not happy with his explanation of innocence and their suspicions were further aroused when the bank said they didn't know him. Finally, a key-holder who knew him arrived to clear up the matter. " Looking back, it seems funny but it wasn't at the time, I didn't know what was going on," said Brian, "I really thought they were going to charge me." Brian's next job was at the Tower of London. "I don't think I'll get into any mischief with the Crown Jewels." he said.
