Avelair are proud to have recently partenered with St Nicholas Hopsice in Bury St Edmunds as a Link Corporate Parnter. On top of this, we have gift-funded a new syringe drivers, at a cost of £1600 for one of their community nurses to use when they are going out caring for people in their own homes.
A syringe driver is a small, battery-powered pump that delivers medication through a plastic tube into a syringe with a needle which is placed just under the skin. This is generally the skin on the arm, leg, abdomen or it could be somewhere else on the body. The continuous dose of medication is used to treat symptoms such as pain, vomiting, agitation and fits. Syringe drivers may be used when there is a lot of severe pain and a regular flow of medication is needed for enough pain relief or when it is difficult to swallow tablets or liquid because of a sore or dry mouth. Syringe drivers are a very reliable way to control symptoms. Using one can be an alternative to having regular, repeated injections which can restrict what you can do and where you can go.
We are proud to be connected to this fantastic charity.
