Reverse Engineering – What it is and how we do it.

Precision Reverse Engineering Solutions by Axiom

We regularly have customers who ask ‘I have one of these, can you make a replacement?’ or ‘I need a fitting to work with this piece of machinery, can you make one?’

The answer to this is usually YES, we can make one, but we will need to reverse engineer it!

According to the Oxford Dictionary Reverse Engineering is ‘ the reproduction of another manufacturer’s product following a detailed examination of its construction or composition’. In summary this is exactly what we do, although, it’s not too simple in real life.

The key to reverse engineering a product is to establish.

  1. a) What it made of.
  2. b) How big is it.
  3. c) How it has been constructed and what it does.

Materials need to be checked, sizes and methods of construction need to be established. We also need to consider if it is something we can make with the processes we have in house. If not, we can use one of our partner companies. It’s then important to accurately establish the item’s dimensions. We can use our Faro Arm to accurately calculate the key characteristics of the item. The customer may decide that a particular dimension must be absolutely identical to the original, but another may not be so critical.

Alternatively we may need to reverse engineer a piece of machinery. We are usually requested to manufacture a new fitting or piece of tooling will fit with the existing item. To do this we need to establish not just the size of the machinery, but also how it operates and how this will interact with the new fitting. A site visit to examine the existing machinery, accurately measuring its sizes and checking it’s operation by our engineer, is the next step. We will then discuss the exact requirements with our customer, i.e. what he requires the new fitting to do.

Our engineering design team will take the information gathered about the product or machinery. From this information they produce a detailed specification and 3D CAD model. These are always approved by the customer in advance of manufacture. Once our customer is happy with the proposed designs, the item will move into our standard manufacturing procedures.
