The EU regulation for product tracking (track and trace) of food has existed since 2005 . This obligation applies to farmers, importers, transporters, the food industry as well as food wholesalers and food retailers. Every step from sowing to harvest must be documented. The traceability always refers to a batch that was produced together in one operation. Each batch has a consistent batch identification. So far, the obligation has only been valid for food without specifying the best before date and loose food.
