Bamboo…. A Wonder Plant
Bamboo History
While Bamboo grows everywhere in the world (except really cold climates), it is thought bamboo originated in china. Its history can be traced back 7,500 years to Chinese people planting and using bamboo, it was used is various aspects of ancient Chinese people’s daily lives such as food, clothing, housing, writing instruments and even weapons. I wonder what they would think of all the things we use bamboo for in this day and age!
Eco Credentials
Bamboo has been used though history not only because of its strength, but also through its renewable prospects. Some species of bamboo can equal the height and width of a tree and can take as little as sixty days to mature. Harvesting occurs between 3-5 years, after which the bamboo plant regrows.
Although bamboo looks and feels like wood, it actually belongs to the grass family. Bamboo is easy to grow because of its root systems; its root system helps to clump earth. This not only prevents erosion, but it rebuilds already eroded earth. This is important in tropical regions where heavy rainfall can deplete nutrients and strip the land of soil.
Since bamboo requires no chemicals and very little water to grow, it is an environmental wonder-plant. As if this were not enough, bamboo absorbs more carbon dioxide from the air than either cotton or timber. It also releases more oxygen (35%) into the environment which improves air quality.
Biodegradable
Bamboo is 100% natural and biodegradable. Once you have no further use for a bamboo product you can rest easy, knowing that it will return to the Earth leaving minimal environmental impact. So much better to enjoy a product that has a small environmental footprint and leaves barely a trace.
Current Use and Why?
Bamboo is used in everyday appliances because of its economic sustainability of the plant, bamboo is an excellent resource. Bamboo is used as building materials, books, clothing, mugs, paper. Lanyards, pens and so much more.
Pen Barrels are made from compressed mao bamboo fibres, these fibres undergo a chemical free process know as carbonisation, they are heated under pressurised steam for a prolonged period to cause the natural sugars in the bamboo to caramelise which allows it to be removed. The fibres are then mixed with the resin and pressed under extreme pressure into planks, these planks are then cut into long strips which the pen barrels are machined from.
As a material for promotional items, bamboo is undoubtedly suitable. The fibres create high-quality and durable promotional items that are environmentally friendly and biodegradable. Due to this, the use of bamboo in advertising is very popular nowadays! Companies that want to identify and present themselves with environmental awareness should keep this raw material in mind when choosing their next promotional merchandise.
For a resource for now and the future bamboo has a had a long and rich history. It will be used for years to come in everything from household things, promotional Merchandise, building materials and much more, as more information is learnt about the miracle material.
