Traditionally an arch radiates from one or more focal points. The key brick is the centre brick of the arch. However in many cases the key brick is replaced with a piece of cut stone that is either decorated or projects from the face of the arch to create shadow.
The keystone or brick feature may have a face-height one or more courses above the arch. It may also drop below the soffit line or camber of the arch. The contrast of colour, texture and height creates an impressive feature in any elevation.
