Portable cabins are prefabricated buildings that can be delivered in one unit to a site. All the electrical fittings are in place, so once the cabin is connected to an electricity supply it is ready for use. They are ideal for situations where a short term facility is required, such as a marketing suite or a community clinic.
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about portable cabins.
Are there different types of portable cabin?
There are different types of cabin available. The most common types are the standard portable cabin, the modular building, jackleg cabins, and anti-vandal cabins.
Portable cabins
Standard cabins are ready made stand-alone units that are delivered in one piece to a site, requiring minimal effort to set up. They are delivered on a HGV and craned into position. They can be stacked on top of each other for extra capacity, and in most cases they will be linked by an uncovered external staircase.
Cabins can also be linked horizontally via a covered walkway, although this does take up extra internal space.
Modular buildings
Modular buildings are delivered to the site in separate units and fastened together, so they take more time to install than a portable cabin. However, the set up time is minimal when compared to a traditional bricks and mortar building.
Modular buildings usually have more internal space than cabins and can be double or triple stacked with internal staircases or lifts fitted. Multiple cabins can be installed side by side and linked together via internal corridors.
Jackleg cabins
Jackleg cabins have external metal support legs on the underside corners, and are used when they need to be installed on uneven ground, or stacked on top of each other. The legs can be adjusted until the cabin is level.
Anti vandal cabins
Anti vandal cabins are made from corrugated or flat steel wall panels and doors for extra protection on sites where there is a high risk of theft or vandalism. The windows are fitted with lockable steel shutters for extra security. This provides extra peace of mind on sites with unsecured perimeters, such as building sites.
What foundations are required for a portable building?
Modular buildings require a solid foundation. This is usually a concrete pad or strip of appropriate size for the building. The supplier or manufacturer should be able to advise you on individual requirements and will arrange a site visit if necessary. They should also be able to supply you with concrete pads.
Portable cabins with jacklegs may be able to be installed on existing hardstanding. The best route is to request a free of charge site visit from the supplier and they will be able to offer you the correct advice. Cabins that will be stacked on top of each other may require additional support.
The supplier’s team should also contact you prior to the delivery to go through the general procedures and ensure that the site is fully prepared and accessible.
