As of the 8th March, schools within England welcomed pupils back into the classroom. 2020 was a very challenging year for all and in particular for children and young people. According to Young Minds, it is estimated one in eight children and young people have a diagnosable mental health condition which roughly equates to three children in every classroom*. When looking at these statistics, the impact of coronavirus on school age children becomes clearer.
Exercise has been proven to release endorphins and increase concentration levels which can in turn improve mental health. In light of this, Sport England have secured a further £10.1 million of government funding to allow schools to open their facilities for physical activities outside of normal school operating hours. This multitude of funding will enable eligible schools and organisations to invest in sports and outdoor fitness equipment so that children and young people can improve their overall wellbeing.

PE and Sport Premium
Designed to help children get an active start in life by supporting primary schools to improve the quality of their PE and sport provision.
Allocations to schools are determined by a formula based on pupil numbers, schools with 16 or fewer eligible pupils receive £1,000 per pupil. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil. The average one form entry primary school will receive roughly £18,000 per year.
Funding currently stands at £320 million for the 2020/21 academic year.
The funding is a ring-fenced grant for English primary schools to provide additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, sport and physical activity.
As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the DfE took steps to relax the ring-fencing arrangements for the PE and sport premium in the 2019/20 academic year to allow any unspent grants to be carried forward into the 2020/21 academic year which need to be spent in full by 31 March 2021.
