The Journey to Carbon Neutral
03-02-2023
What does it mean to be carbon neutral?
Carbon neutrality is a state of net-zero carbon dioxide emissions. It means having a perfect balance between emitting carbon and the absorption of carbon from the atmosphere by what are known as natural carbon sinks, ie, soil, forests and oceans.
Why is it important to be carbon neutral?
In a nutshell, to protect our planet. Climate change is causing extreme weather conditions such as drought, heat waves and floods across the world, as well as rising sea levels, ocean acidification and loss of biodiversity.
According to estimates, natural carbon sinks such as soil, oceans and forests remove between 9.5 and 11 Gt (gigatonnes) of CO2 per year, but annual global emissions reached a whopping 36 Gt in 2020.
Cutting our carbon footprint is a vital part of what we all need to do to slash carbon emissions and make our planet a nicer – and safer – place to live in.
It’s also important from a business point of view. Consumers now expect the companies they buy from to use sustainable processes, including in their packaging – which is why businesses have to do everything they can to achieve carbon neutral status, for the good of their customers, their revenues and the world around us.
How will it benefit my business to become carbon neutral?
Not only will you be meeting the sustainability expectations of your customers, you will also reduce the amount of PPT (Plastic Packaging Tax) that you have to pay, and in time, cut it out altogether.
PPT is currently set at £200 per metric tonne and applies to plastic packaging manufactured in, or imported to, the UK, where the plastic used is less than 30% recycled. Firstly reducing and then eliminating those costs would be of major benefit to your business – and your reputation as a sustainability pioneer!
