Carbolite Gero employees and management are marking 80 years since the company began manufacturing high temperature combustion furnaces in Sheffield which were used primarily at that time to determine the sulphur content of fuels.
Carbolite was originally located in Sheffield on Rockingham Street but moved to Sussex Street and then the Emmanuel Works in Attercliffe. In 1965 Carbolite acquired Bamford Mill on the banks of the River Derwent and shifted all production there in 1966. The site occupied 6 acres, had an operational water mill powering the lighting and provided over 63,000 sq.ft. of space for the business.
In 1983 the Company received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Export Achievement and grew with a series of targeted acquisitions. An expanding order book and increased exports led to the acquisition of land next to Hope railway station and in 1993 production of ovens and furnaces was transferred to the Company’s new purpose built facility. Bamford Mill was sold for redevelopment.
The last quarter of a century has seen substantial changes to ownership and management teams but was acquired by Verder Group in July 2012. Verder later acquired Gero, a German vacuum furnace company, in 2013. Just over two years after that acquisition in January 2016, Verder joined Carbolite and Gero creating an organisation with two modern manufacturing facilities in Hope and Neuhausen.
Today, Carbolite Gero holds ISO 9000:2015, is a member of the ‘Made in Sheffield’ programme and is recognised globally as a leader in the design, manufacture, commissioning, service and repair of laboratory and industrial scale furnaces and ovens from 30oC to 3000oC.
Celebrations to commemorate 80 years of manufacturing will continue through to the end of 2018. All products shipped until then will carry the 80th Anniversary logo. The company’s web site and social media presence reflect this important milestone and all employees will receive an engraved gift in August that recognises their expertise, hard-work and professionalism.
Continued investment since 2016 has created a solid foundation for numerous product development projects which should ensure that Carbolite Gero will have even more to celebrate in 2038 for the centenary of the Company’s foundation.
