Without a UPS system, if the electrical supply dips or fails the CCTV equipment would stop working. Therefore, when a CCTV system is installed, it is recommended that a UPS system is also installed to protect against power failures. How does it fit into the system? The UPS is connected between the raw mains power and the equipment to be protected. A CCTV system’s power supply, DVR and any other devices are plugged into the UPS. During normal operation, the mains supply passes through the UPS, charging the batteries and supplies the CCTV system at the same time. If/when the mains power fails, these devices will be powered via the UPS system. Specifying the right UPS for the CCTV system To specify aUPS, you will need to know the total load (watts, amps or VA) of the system to be protected. This would commonly include cameras, monitors and DVR’s. Secondly, you will have to decide on how long you would like the equipment to be protected (backed up) in the event of a power failure.
