This year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show there is a gem of a garden. The Bridgerton Garden, designed by Holly Johnston, is a beautiful space inspired by the emotional transformation of the character, Penelope Featherington from the popular Netflix series. Let’s take a look at what makes it special.
A PERSONAL SPACE TO GROW
The garden is a small, secluded area imagined as part of a much larger formal garden. This is garden is a representation of the transformation of the character Penelope Featherington, played by Nicola Coughlan, as she grows from a shy wallflower into a young women, blossoming into her true self. Bridgeton is set in the Regency period, so this is a traditional, formal styled garden, which is right up our street!
The garden is shaded by a ring of elms, making it secluded. A sanctuary from the emotional turmoil of the debutant season not going her way and retreating from the pain and anxiety of unrequited love.
The garden entrance is through a natural stone moon gate. This shields the character within this private garden, with ivy and ferns shrouding their feelings from the world. A secretive space to sit, hidden away from society.
FORMAL EXPECTATIONS
At the garden’s center is a traditional, triple tiered fountain. It is circled by sunken seating. This ornate fountain is beautiful and has a feminine feel. This reflects the expectations of society on women in the television series and the flow of Penelope’s feelings represented by the water spilling from each tier.
EMOTIONAL GROWTH
The path leads to a lighter area of the garden, past an armillary sphere. This is Penelope stepping into the light and being brave enough to accept who she is and be courageous enough to find her own voice. This area is full of bright blooms. A whimsical area to show her coming of age story. A wallflower in full bloom as she steps from the defiance and anxiety of adolescence into confident womanhood.
