Hand files are essential tools that are used to remove metal and refine surfaces in preperation for other techniques. Files cut as they are pushed forward across the surface of the desired area. However Files do not cut on the return stroke as this would undo the smoothing of the surface just made on the forward cut. This flat file measures 200mm long (8 inches) and has an overall width of 19.2mm. It features a flattened tip, not tapered and has a flat profile making it ideal for flat and convex surfaces, suitable for ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It has a smooth cut and is supplied without a handle but available separately: 999 488. Always begin with the largest, coarsest file (bearing mind the job in hand) and work through to the finest. The coarser the file the more metal is removed. Half round, round, flat and safety back profiles are the most commonly used shapes.
