Hand files are essential tools that are used to remove metal and refine surfaces in preperation for other techniques. The half round file features a cross section, being rounded on one side and flat on the other. This allows the file to be used on either convex or concave surfaces. Half round files taper in both width and thickness towards the tip. Vallorbe Swiss Precision Files are produced with the finest high-carbon steel to the highest standards of accuracy, performance and service life. It will remove metal and provide a refined surface. Work in one direction and use in a push action, filing gently away from you in one direction. Although not essential, file handles are available - 999 0549. The working area of the file measure 15.3mm x 4.7mm and it has a 152mm/6" overall length. The coarser the file the more metal is removed. Files are graded as below: Cut 00 | Very coarse Cut 0 | Coarse Cut 1 | Coarse-Medium Cut 2 | Medium Cut 3 | Medium-Fine Cut 4 | Fine Cut 6 | Very fine To achieve best results we would recommend to cut only on the forward stroke and not on the return stroke as this will undo any smoothing. Always begin with the largest, coarsest file suitable for the job and work through to the finest, with the option of moving onto a needle file if required. Other shapes and cuts are available.
