Virtual demonstration of PicoColour digital label press secures investment for ModTek

Dantex Digital, part of Dantex Group, is due to ship a fully-specced PicoColour UV inkjet digital label press to New Jersey US-based label manufacturer, ModTek. The sale of the press was unusual as, due to pandemic restrictions, both in the US and the UK, the transaction between both parties successfully progressed virtually, without the customer having physically seen the press live prior to the sale.

Traditionally a flexo print house, ModTek has used digital print for a number of years having upgraded an existing flexo press with a digital print module. Whilst this move helped to develop market penetration, the durability of the press, lightfastness and the lack of an opaque white created a number of issues. In addition, throughput of work on their flexo presses is routinely hampered by amendments to graphics and regulatory information on the first few production rounds. These mid-production changes are costly and irritating to clients.

ModTek researched suitable digital press solutions and, having had previous dealings with Dantex, decided to progress a PicoColour digital press investment.

“With the issues we currently have, the PicoColour ticks all the right boxes,” said ModTek’s Shawn R. Borman. “Dantex has proven to be a true partner with us in other areas and has been very proactive. This excellent customer service, combined with a reasonably priced press that offers lightfast, durable inks and the ability to fully convert labels inline, proves to be a winning combination. Also, the PicoColour has a fantastic opaque white”.

“And while we have done a great job in dialling in our conventional equipment, it is a fact that digital will eventually take over the label industry. We will proceed with conventional printing into the foreseeable future but continue to add equipment and grow the digital side. As Dantex has more than one digital solution, I hope to explore more of what they have to offer as we grow. Eventually, we will be a fully digital label company,” he added.

The PicoColour has been developed to address continuing demand from major brands for value-added label and package printing. With a printing width of 8.25” and a running capacity of 82ft per minute, the PicoColour is a versatile and highly productive printing system, offered at a competitive price. The press works with UV based inks and is available with CMYK + white, with the option of a variety of additional features including, variable data, lamination, die-station, edge trim and splicing, all of which were added to ModTek’s PicoColour.

Commenting on the investment, Joseph Sanchez, US territory sales manager, Dantex Group, said: “The PicoColour is an ideal investment for ModTek as they look for growth across their target markets. Their investment is also testament to our digital support team in the UK who were able to virtually demonstrate the PicoColour’s complete front-end functionality, including options, in one session. ModTek were very pleased with the outcome and we look forward to installing their new press in November.”

Dantex launched their digital division in 2015, having served the labels and packaging industry for over 50 years.
