Substantiation of Piping Package
05-12-2023
THE CHALLENGE
DC White Consulting Engineers were commissioned to substantiate a piping package to several codes, ASME B31.3 for the pipework and API 610 for the nozzle loads. A previous report found that the loads acting on the pump suction and discharge nozzles were failing to meet the requirements of API 610. The recommended modifications were to place the pump on a sliding baseplate and include an additional support to reduce vertical loads on the discharge line.
OUR SOLUTION
The geometry of the pipework was provided as a SolidWorks assembly file; the piping software used to model and analyse the pipework was Bentley AutoPIPE CONNECT. The program allows us to examine multiple loading scenarios such as thermal, seismic, wind and dynamic load cases. The resulting stress, moments, deflections and forces can then be compared to a library of standards built into the program. Our analysis found that by implementing our modifications, the piping package met the requirements of ASME B31.3 and API 610.
BENEFITS
Using AutoPIPE allows us to easily model a complex piping system and substantiate it to a range of industrial standards. Our knowledge and understanding of the standards allows us to examine the results in detail and provide an accurate report of our findings. We are able to provide the customer with quick and accurate results which were used to modify the design to meet the set standards.
