Who could have imagined that an industrial material known for its durability and strength, would become the contemporary choice for residential interiors? Until fairly recently ‘concrete’ and ‘home’ were not a natural pairing. Enter the 21st century, though, and the cool shimmer of polished concrete floors in homes was set to become a major trend.
How did it happen? That’s what this blog sets out to understand. The DirectStone team has been installing polished concrete flooring for more than a decade now, and we think that there are 5 good reasons why polished concrete floors in homes continue to dominate the residential flooring sector.

1. POLISHED CONCRETE FLOORING LOOKS SO GOOD
The sleek, contemporary urban look is undeniably sensational. And it suits a range of property styles. We’ve installed polished concrete floors in half timbered barn conversions, new-builds and everything in-between. The signature high gloss finish provides the ultimate polished concrete WoW factor. Many of our clients, though, prefer the subtle shimmer of natural light playing off our satin, or matte finishes.
2. POLISHED CONCRETE PAIRS PERFECTLY WITH UNDERFLOOR HEATING
Concrete is ideal for solar heating sources. If the sun shines on its surface it will absorb the solar heat, holding it for a while even after the sun has disappeared. This is what makes concrete a perfect partner for underfloor heating. Once your heating system is laid, concrete is easy to pour over it.
3. IDEAL FOR INDOOR/OUTDOOR LIVING
Some of the most stunning installations we’ve completed have been on polished concrete floors that straddle the indoors/outdoors boundary. Concrete floors work equally well indoors or out so where bi-fold doors, for example, form the threshold we can create a seamless continuity between a patio and living spaces. In the summer this can be enhanced with the use of rugs, and plants blending the two environments.
4. EASILY MAINTAIN THE ‘JUST POLISHED’ LOOK
The DirectStone team love the looks on the faces of clients seeing their polished concrete flooring for the first time. It’s so beautiful that you want to keep it that way – forever. Luckily, it’s not hard to do. The important thing is to keep your floor free of dust and grit. Regular sweeping, followed up with mopping using light detergent is all you need.
5. CONCRETE FLOORING CAN BE RETROFITTED
Our floor specialists regularly create stunning polished concrete flooring finished in older properties. More often than not concrete floors already exist but have been covered up with carpet or tiles. We are normally able to use these floors as our basis to create unique polished concrete that’s totally eco-friendly!
