POLISHED CONCRETE RESTORATION IN THE COTSWOLDS
At DirectStone we’re lucky enough to encounter a variety of working environments. It’s quite rare, though, to find yourself in a beautiful geographical location – the Cotswolds – confronted with an inspiring work location. Our client’s open plan kitchen, with its abundance of natural light, is the perfect environment for elegant polished concrete. The existing floor, though, needed some specialist help to restore it to its ‘just polished’ state.
WHY DOES POLISHED CONCRETE REQUIRE RESTORATION?
Polished concrete flooring not only looks great, it’s also easy to maintain. Regular sweeping and mopping with keep it looking good ‘good as new’ for a number of years. If, however, your polished concrete flooring begins to dull, there are a number of possible causes:
Sealers are used to prevent staining of concrete floors. These wear over time and have to be replaced.
Dust and dirt can create small scratches on the surface of the polished concrete. These accumulate more dust and the surface loses its gleam.
Concrete floors that have been neglected will stain easily, and lose the sheen of their polished surface.
WHAT DOES RESTORATION CONSIST OF?
DirectStone flooring specialists will always take a look at a damaged or neglected polished concrete floor to ascertain what work needs doing. Our kitchen in the Cotswolds required the surface to be ground back in order to remove worn sealer, scratches and stains. We use HTC Superfloor™ grinding machines to remove the surface of the concrete, prior to re-polishing.
Once the pristine surface is revealed, the DirectStone team re-hone the flooring. This process uses diamond tooling to achieve a smooth, level finish ready for polishing. Our client wanted the floor restored to its original glowing, polished sheen. Once this was achieved, the floor was sealed once more and the refurbishment was complete.

Seeing the floor restored to its original glory was a joy, as much for us as for our client. It happened that the sun was shining through the kitchen’s large picture windows. The surface of the polished concrete picked up the bright light and intensified it – creating that WOW factor that we talk about so much when working with concrete.
