Find The Needle Add My Company
Apprenticeships in action - hard work that pays off
Earlier this month we were thrilled to celebrate a huge achievement by our Junior Software Developer Daniel Hitchen. Not only had he received the news that he had passed his Level 4 apprenticeship in his field, but he had been awarded the highest classification – a Distinction. This is testament not only to Daniel’s hard work but his perseverance and his commitment to his own personal development.

We asked Daniel to share his thoughts on the apprenticeship model, how he found it and what advice he’d give to anyone else considering studying and training on-the-job. Our HR Manager Lucy Pawson and Managing Director Al Gleed also shared their views on the programme and Daniel’s fantastic achievement.

Interview with Daniel Hitchen, Junior Software Developer:

Daniel, What first led you to first purse a career in Software Development?

I started my career in the field of photography, training and working in the industry for several years, but when I was placed on furlough during the covid pandemic I took the opportunity to learn a new skill with the aim of changing paths in the future. After doing some research into the different areas available to me I choose to focus on Software Development because I enjoyed coding, have always had an interest tech and felt that it could provide good potential career prospects moving forward.

How have you found the apprenticeship process and studying alongside working?

I started my apprenticeship at the start of 2022, soon after joining DJS and had 24 months in which to complete it. Unfortunately, the original training provider was unable to fulfil the entire programme, so we moved to a new provider, Estio, after 8 months. Thankfully Estio quickly got me back on track with my studying and through them I’ve been able to finish my apprenticeship without any further delays.

The apprenticeship gave me a great opportunity to further my skills whilst working and I was able to put into practice everything I was learning, whilst working closely with my manager Sergio, across many varied development projects. Sergio also did a fantastic job providing me with mentorship and training on the job, and ensuring I was able to fully contribute to all levels of the development process required for me to successfully complete my apprenticeship.

What have you enjoyed most about your Level 4 Software Developer apprenticeship?

Building important new applications like the Cati and Field team hubs, which were key projects during my apprenticeship, gave me a great opportunity to work with different teams across DJS which I really enjoyed. The apprenticeship has also helped me further my knowledge in application development with the ASP.NET Core framework.

What advice would you give to someone considering undertaking an apprenticeship?

It can be a lot of work at this level so it’s important to choose a subject matter which you have a real interest in, and ensure you are applying what you are learning on the job when you have the chance.

Our HR Manager Lucy Pawson explained a little more about why we were led to consider an apprenticeship for this role and reflects on Daniel’s achievement:

We first considered apprenticeships when we were looking to recruit a Junior Software Developer, as the role felt like the perfect opportunity to support on-the-job training. Daniel joined DJS Research as a permanent member of our team with the help of the apprentice provider and began work on his apprentice qualification from the start; this enabled him to hone his skills in his junior developer role day to day, whilst receiving formal training to expand his knowledge further and support his career progression.

Although having to change providers part way through wasn’t ideal, Daniel has shown determination and resilience throughout the process. His hard work and enthusiasm has really paid off as he achieved a well-deserved Distinction. For DJS, we have had the benefit of recruiting a great employee who was willing to learn and engage from day one – congratulations Daniel.

Our Managing Director, Al Gleed, also shared his views on the important role apprenticeships can play in the industry:

Apprenticeships are a win-win for us; the blend of on-the-job training and mentorship helps the company to foster talent tailored to our specific needs, while providing candidates with the opportunity to grow and develop in a real-world environment. Congratulations on your distinction Daniel and thanks again for all your hard work.

Unfortunately we couldn't all be there in person to award Daniel his certificate, but congratulations again Daniel from everyone at DJS Research!
