When newly fitted Lead is exposed to any moisture it builds up a natural patina in the form of a soluble carbonate. When the Lead is exposed to rain it can wash the carbonate on the adjacent materials causing discolouration or staining of surrounding building materials.
Patination Oil should be used on Lead flashings, roofing and cladding to give an attractive, uniform appearance where the Lead is visible. It's also necessary when water is flowing from the Lead Sheet surface may come into contact with any other visible building materials. It prevents the white carbonate that forms on newly fitted Lead from staining any adjacent materials, provides a uniform, attractive appearance to new Leadwork.
