We’ve hear it a lot: The summer of 2014 is going to be the hottest and driest in a number of years. Obviously, this increases concerns about water usage and potential shortages, but according to The Environmental Agency, the UK is not heading for droughts this year. As reported by Farmers Weekly, The Environmental Agency has played down reports that the UK could be heading for droughts, following the wettest winter on record.
Other sources suggest that the dry weather experienced in June could spell similar drought conditions last experienced in 2012, and despite the wet weather last winter, being the wettest since records began in 1910, water levels are falling due to recent dry weather. However, the Environmental Agency stated that overall, water resources across England were looking healthy, that groundwater levels are within normal ranges and are now starting to recede as expected for this time of year.
The Environmental Agency did follow these statements though by reinforcing that it is still important for everyone to use water wisely and one such way of achieving this is through the implementation of rainwater harvesting. Huge volumes of rainwater run off farm roofs and can be stored in dedicated rainwater tanks. Enduramaxx water storage tanks are very rugged tanks, manufactured using a single piece of rotationally-moulded, uv-stabilised polyethylene. They keep water protected for when it is most needed and that could well be when large amounts of water are required for watering crops.
Despite the wet weather, the first confirmation of water abstraction restrictions were sent to abstractors in Kent and the MET office stated that most of the UK, in particular Southern regions, could expect this current long, dry spell to continue over the next fortnight. In addition, according to Farmers Weekly, forecaster Nicola Mazey also talked down suggestions that Britain was heading for a drought. She echoed that, although we are experiencing dry weather, it is fairly typical for this time of year.
