If you’re a grower and one of your crops is blackcurrants, then you wont need telling that the exceptional weather this summer is resulting in larger berries than usual. Farming Life reports that this year’s crop is set to be as healthy as ever, enabling The Blackcurrant Foundation to continue to supply Lucozade Ribena Suntory Ltd.
According to Farming Life, the blackcurrant crops have benefitted from optimum weather, with cold weather early in the year allowing for a good level of bud break and strong crop ripening. Winter rains provided good ground water store resulting in larger berries. Add recent warm weather to the equation, with sunnier periods improving brix levels to averages of at least 16 per cent, the results are sweeter, better tasting currants for 2014.
