Silage Production Hindered – Silage Inoculation, Sprayers and Vertical Storage Tanks
If you follow Farming Life then you may have heard their report that it might not be a very good year for silage production. Tests on grass this year have shown that nitrate levels are high and that sugar and dry matter low. Apparently, a combination of changeable weather has resulted in conditions that are far from ideal for grass. Speaking to Farming Life, expert Tommy Armstrong reported that he has taken a great deal of grass tests due to the difficult conditions. Crops that had light applications of fertilizer during March where nitrates should be long gone had three times over the recommended level. In addition, sugars seem low and dry matters too. However, Tommy states that even in dull weather, the low sugars can be increased by circa 50 per cent through mowing down in the afternoon to early evening. Should it rain on these crops, the fermentation should still be adequate to allow reasonable intakes. If nitrates are high, this may ‘buffer’ the fermentation process and result in higher ammonia silage. The use of a good silage inoculant can reduce the amount of ammonia from 20% to 50%. Enduramaxx provides a range of sprayers and sprayer tanks for the application of silage inoculants. In addition we provide an array of vertical storage tanks suitable for storing large pre-mixed volumes of fertilizers and chemicals. With dedicated liquid fertiliser tanks that store most farming chemicals at optimal conditions, you can be sure that we have a tank for every farming requirement. Click here to learn more!
