The 7 Signs Of Sugar Addiction
08-05-2015
There is great debate in the world of nutrition as to whether people can become addicted to sugar in the same way they can be addicted to cocaine. Many studies have shown similar responses in the brain, although some experts argue that they aren't always the same thing.
However, despite the lack of consensus among experts, it is widely agreed that you can form very bad habits around the way you consume sugar. To keep things simple, we will call this addiction.
Here are some key signs that you are "addicted" to sugar:
1. You find it hard to say no to sugary treats.
2. You regularly crave sugary foods.
3. You want to eat sugary foods even though you aren't hungry.
4. You feel guilty or worry that you're eating too much of certain foods.
5. Once you start to eat the foods you crave, you find it hard to stop.
6. You get a short-term mood or energy boost - and it quickly crashes.
7. If you do try to cut down, you get very strong cravings or even withdrawal symptoms.
Remember - all of these can apply to starchy foods like fries as well as sweet foods!
You don't have to agree with all of the statements above to have an addiction, and agreeing with some or all of them might not be a clear sign that you're addicted. However, it is a warning side that you might be developing an unhealthy mental relationship to sugary foods - and this can have a big affect on your health.
In the next issue we'll go over what sugar actually does to your brain, to help you better understand why it's so bad for you mentally as well as physically.
