OK, so you get the message that anyone can be addicted to sugar, even if they don't have a traditional "sweet tooth". But why should you even care anyway? What's so bad about eating sugar?
Pretty much all of us know that sugar is bad for teeth - we've had that message drilled in by our parents and dentists since we were little! However, the negative effects of sugar go far beyond your teeth.
If you are eating sugar that your body doesn't need to use right away for energy, then it's going to be stored as fat. This, in turn, will mean you put on weight. No big deal if you exercise, right? Unfortunately the truth is that many of us consume way more sugar than we need for exercise and physical activity. In fact, many of us get much of our sugar from drinks which are all too easy to consume too many of without realizing!
Too much sugar can also mess with your blood sugar levels, putting you at a much greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This in turn can lead to a number of serious - potentially fatal - complications like heart disease or stroke.
Aside from those well-known consequences of too much sugar, you also put yourself at greater risk of diseases like cancer.
Pretty scary stuff, right?
The good news is that it is possible to improve your diet, once you learn to identify where you are consuming too much sugar.
Next we'll go over the most common signs that you're addicted to sugar
