Recently, we have seen a number of occurances and reports about “spontaneous glass fracture”, with stories relating to “glass raining down from highrise buildings”. These stories relate to where toughened glass windows and high level glass installations shatter without warning. This can be extremely frightening when it happens near to the ground, but when the glass is overhead it takes on a whole different level of danger. These failures are due to the presence of what are called nickel sulphide inclusions. It can cause a weakness during the manufacture of toughened glass which, although very rare, can go undetected until eventually causing a catastrophic failure in the glass.
