Regulation 14 - you need to know
06-12-2010
Glazing Refurbishment can help you minimise any damage caused by broken glass. By using safety compliant glass and special safety film we can make sure you comply with the law, protect your property and reduce the risk of injury.
Under Regulation 14, it's now law that existing glass in commercial buildings must be upgraded to break safely and must meet EN12600 European impact tests.
Regulation 14 states that:
Every window or other transparent or translucent surface in a wall or partition, and every transparent or translucent surface in a door or gate shall, where necessary for reasons of health or safety:
•be of 'safety material', or be protected against breakage of the transparent or translucent material
and
•be appropriately marked or incorporate features so as, in either case, to make it apparent.
If you're a building owner, building manager, tenant or Health & Safety manager, you'll need to be aware of the types of glass in your building and ensure they comply with Regulation 14.
Penalties where injuries are sustained due to broken glass that does not meet Regulation 14 are unlimited. You could even find yourself facing Corporate Manslaughter charges if you fail to comply.
The requirements of Regulation 14 and those of the 1991 Building Regulations are reflected in the British Standards Code of Practice BS6262 Part 4 1994. All low level glazing where employees or the public are likely to come into contact should, where necessary for reasons of health and safety, be protected against breakage.
Glazing Refurbishment can help you minimise the risk of injury due to broken glass. We can:
•carry out a detailed evaluation of your premises and identify any areas that need upgrading
•provide an estimated cost
•agree a planned implementation programme to complete the work.
