Fritted Glass

Fritted glass is where an enamel image has been fired into the surface of glass. This firing process will be often done while the glass is being toughened. This in effect creats normal structural glass as used widely throughout the construction industry. Any toughened glass panel can have images printed onto its surface. As with many processes economies of scale come into play here. One image on one piece of glass constitutes a relatively lengthy process, but the repetition of images makes it a much more viable proposition, and the creative opportunities for architectural expression are considerable. Fritting also offers solar control properties as gain and glare can be hugely reduced by enamel on glass. In the world of commercial glazing, fritting is normally associated with white dots, squares or other manifestations placed to prevent people bumping into the glass panel. However a whole new language is becoming available in terms of the form and visible texture of the façades of buildings. Such is the versatility of fritted glass that it is possible to create the illusions of a 3 dimentional image while being an a 2 dimentional plane.
