BS standards and CE marking – which standards apply to rooflights?
There are many relevant standards that can impact on the specification of rooflights. Most standards apply to in plane rooflights, or those made using plastic, polycarbonate or GRP.
There are only two types of glass rooflights which have relevant standards:
1. In plane Roof windows, which need to comply with BS EN 14351-1:2010. This standard applies to roof windows which are installed in the same orientation and in plane with the surrounding roof, typically at a minimum 15 degrees pitch and weathered into the roof using skirt or flashing.
2. Smoke Vent or ventilation rooflights; these need to comply with BS EN 12101-2 as they are designed to provide natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilators which are intended to be installed as a component of a natural smoke and heat exhaust system. To comply with Construction Products Regulations, AOV systems must be CE marked against this standard. In order to be efficient, AOV systems must undergo a series of rigorous tests which adhere to BS EN 12101-2:2003.To find out more about these tests read our blog post ‘What is BS EN 12101’.

Other standards that need to be considered when specifying rooflights are:
BS 5516-1:2004 Patent glazing and sloping glazing for buildings. Code of practice for design and installation of sloping and vertical patent glazing. This covers general design, manufacture and installation.
BS 5516-2:2004 Patent glazing and sloping glazing for buildings. Code of practice for sloping glazing. This covers recommendations for the design, properties and maintenance specific to sloped patent glazing.
BS EN 14351-1:2006+A1:2010 Windows and doors. Product standard, performance characteristics. Windows and external pedestrian doorsets without resistance to fire and/or smoke leakage characteristics.
BS EN 14963:2006. Roof coverings. Continuous rooflights of plastics with or without upstands. Classification, requirements and test methods. This applies to barrel rooflights.
BS EN 1873:2014. Prefabricated accessories for roofing. Individual rooflights of plastics. Product specification and test methods. This applies to roof domes and other prefabricated elements.
How do you prove performance?
As there are no specific British standards and no harmonised European standard (hEN) for out of plane flat glass rooflights, the only way to prove suitability and performance is through independent testing organisations such as British Board of Agrément (BBA).
The BBA is the UK’s major authority offering approval and certification services to manufacturers and installers in the construction industry. BBA Approval is recognised by building control, government departments, architects, local authorities, specifiers, and industry insurers like the NHBC.
Rooflights that have been accredited by the BBA will have been tested to the following criteria:
1. Strength and stability
2. Durability
3. Condensation risk
4. Light and solar transmittance
5. Behavior during a fire
6. Water resistance
7. Thermal performance
