A new formula containing medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) has been developed for use in American hospitals.
With the number of overweight and obese patients in intensive care units rising, it is important that each patient should be receiving foods which meets their individual nutritional needs. The formula from Nestle HealthCare Nutrition provides 33% of the patient’s calories from a 50:50 mixture of MCTs and LCTs (long chain triglycerides).
Because of the unique way in which MCTs are digested, only a very small percentage is stored as fat. The majority is transported via the portal system to the liver, where it is oxidised into ketone bodies which are a readily available source of energy in place of glucose.
MCTs have been used clinically since the 1960s for a variety of disorders, diseases and recovery treatments such as fat mal-absorption, dietetic treatment of epilepsy in children and post-operation recovery. The oil has long been hailed as “the fat which won’t make you fat”.
