Harlequin Floors on track at Antwerp train station
Commuters arriving at Antwerp Centraal Station on Friday 26th September were in for a pleasant surprise. Semi-finalists of the Genée International Ballet Competition as well as competitors from the Genée Dance Challenge, the Genee’s younger sister, performed on a sprung dance floor installed at the railway station by Harlequin Floors for the entertainment pleasure of early morning travellers.
With the Genée in town, the railway station performance was made possible by Harlequin Floors, official dance floor sponsors for the 2014 event. Harlequin brought in a Liberty sprung floor topped off with Harlequin Reversible dance surface for the one hour performance which commenced at 8 am. Harlequin marketing duo Mark Rasmussen and Caroline Reilly, who were attending the Genée, explained that the capability of a temporary sprung floor installation was made possible by Harlequin Liberty’s modular panel construction. Panels are secured together using a patented, hand-operated latching mechanism. Portable Liberty panels are ideal for touring productions, providing a consistent dance floor from venue to venue. Research shows this is important for dancers to minimise injury from performing on otherwise hard, unyielding floors such as a railway station. Other Genée highlights included the ‘Diamond Dinner’ at the Paleis de Meir and of course the finals at the Opera House.
The Genée International Ballet Competition, named after RAD's first president Dame Adeline Genée DBE, is RAD’s flagship annual event. Known simply as ‘the Genée’, it is one of the most prestigious ballet competitions in the world, attracting the finest young dancers trained in the RAD syllabus, from around the globe. Candidates receive a unique opportunity to work with renowned choreographers and teachers for five days before performing at the semi-finals, and then the final, where they compete for a range of medals.
